In Transit (Drawings)
These drawings come from images gathered while riding in a car or train throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley of California. I am often commuting long hours on trains to work or riding on the long stretch of highway 99. Looking out the window of a train often feels like looking at stage props from behind. High walls and fences with rooftops of pristine suburban housing developments peeping over. Fields of weeds and discarded boats. Restaurant trash bins. I find it fascinating to observe the designed landscape of travel that is created not to be looked at, yet many spend hours out of their days on these thoroughfares, forming an intimate familiarity with the landscape.
